A 34-year-old San Clemente man was in custody on suspicion of bank robbery after Orange County sheriff’s deputies followed a lead to his house, officials said.

John William Hollenbeck was being held at the Orange County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail after his Friday afternoon arrest at his home in the 600 block of Avenida Los Flores, sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Hector Rivera said.

Deputies investigating the 1:20 p.m. robbery at the Bank of America at 621 El Camino Real searched nearby neighborhoods for a suspect fitting witness descriptions of the man who fled the bank on foot with about $2,000 in stolen cash, Rivera said.

Sheriff’s Lt. Lynn Nehring said an “investigative lead” then led deputies to the door of Hollenbeck, who fit the description of the robber who had pretended to have a gun in his waistband.

“He then basically said he was the one that did it,” Nehring said.
