Montebello police shot and wounded a man suspected of driving a stolen car after he rammed a police car during a chase in Commerce, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said Friday.

Daniel Evangelisti, 34, refused to stop at a drunk driving checkpoint on Whittier Boulevard at Bluff Road in Montebello shortly after 10:30 p.m. Thursday, said Deputy Steve Sciacca.

Evangelisti allegedly tried to run over a police officer and sped away, Sciacca said. He was chased to the 5000 block of Triggs Street, where he made a U-turn and rammed the police car head-on, slightly injuring an officer, Sciacca said.

After Evangelisti left the car, he pointed a handgun at the officers, the deputy said. They both opened fire and wounded the suspect in the upper body, the deputy said.

Evangelisti was taken to the jail ward at County-USC Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition, Sciacca said.
