SAN DIEGO--The 18th annual parade honoring Martin Luther King Jr. steps off at 10 a.m. Saturday on West Harbor Drive at Grape Street. Diversity is the goal, say organizers, so no entry fees are charged to participants, which include marching bands, drill teams and community groups. (619) 264-0542.

RED BLUFF--The annual roundup of cowpunchers and bucking broncs at the Jim Owens Memorial Ranch Rodeo is Jan. 23-24 at Tehama District Fairgrounds, on Antelope Boulevard. There will be roping and riding; food and western art and goods, such as spurs, for sale; and on Jan. 23, live country music. 4-10 p.m. Jan. 23 (free admission), 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Jan. 24 (admission after 6 p.m., when finals of events are held, is $5 per person). COLOMA--In 1848, they found gold in them thar hills. To mark the sesquicentennial of James Marshall’s momentous find, Gold Discovery Days kicks off Jan. 24-25 with activities at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, on California 49. Arriving the old-fashioned way will be six wagons, both covered and open, after a trek from Fresno. Encampments will be set up, and candle making, spinning, weaving and gold panning will be demonstrated. BAKERSFIELD--The Quilt Show, put on every two years by the Cotton Patch Quilters of Kern County, has a historic twist to mark Bakersfield’s centennial year. Group members and vendors will dress in period costume, and antique quilts will be among those on display. There will be a fashion show of quilted clothing, a quilt auction and a drawing ($1 per ticket) for four quilts.
