For the first time as a head coach, Bill Guthridge had to talk about a loss.

And although No. 1 North Carolina’s leading scorer had only one point over the final 18 minutes Wednesday night and the Tar Heels struggled in overtime, Guthridge took the blame.

“I don’t think I coached as well as I should have. I hope I can learn from my mistakes,” Guthridge said after Maryland handed the Tar Heels their first loss of the season, 89-83, at College Park, Md.

North Carolina, 17-1 overall and 4-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, had won 34 of 35, including 17 in a row under Guthridge, who took over for Dean Smith this season.

This time, however, North Carolina never led after Laron Profit made two foul shots for a 84-82 lead with 2:11 left. Profit scored six of his 19 points in overtime for the Terrapins (10-5, 3-2).

Antawn Jamison scored 27 points for North Carolina, but he missed four foul shots in overtime and his one free throw with 7.4 seconds left was his only point over the final 18 minutes.

No. 2 Duke 88, Wake Forest 52--The Demon Deacons lost for the sixth time in eight games and are off to their worst start in the ACC in six years.

Shane Battier led a stifling defense with four steals at Winston-Salem, N.C., that helped the Blue Devils (15-1, 5-0) win their sixth consecutive game.

Wake Forest (8-6, 1-3) went more than nine minutes without a basket in the second half.

No. 3 Kansas 83, Texas A&M; 65--The Jayhawks took advantage of the Aggies’ cold second-half shooting to win the Big 12 game at College Station, Texas.

The Aggies (6-8, 0-4) missed their final seven shots of the first half and their first eight of the second half, allowing the Jayhawks (20-2, 4-0) to break the game open with a 12-2 run.

Iowa (14-2, 3-1) won for the eighth time in its last nine games. It was the Hawkeyes’ eighth consecutive victory over the Buckeyes (7-9, 0-3).

George Washington 78, No. 18 Xavier 73--Freshman Mike King made two free throws with no time remaining in regulation to tie the score at 68-68, then scored six points in overtime to lead the Colonials (14-3, 3-1) past the Musketeers (10-4, 2-2) in the Atlantic 10 game at Washington.

No. 22 Arkansas 89, Florida 84--Kareem Reid made two free throws with 24 seconds left as the Razorbacks held off the Gators in the Southeastern Conference game at Fayetteville, Ark.

Reid’s free throws made it 87-84 and came after Tarik Wallace stole an inbounds pass following a Florida (8-5, 2-2) timeout. Arkansas (14-2, 3-0) increased the lead when Wallace made two free throws 13 seconds later.

Missouri 70, No. 25 Oklahoma State 64--Freshman Brian Grawer made seven of eight free throws over the final three minutes and the Tigers (9-6, 2-2) upset the Cowboys (12-2, 2-2) in the Big 12 game at Columbia, Mo.
