Space Exploration

Jan. 28 will mark the 12th anniversary of the space shuttle Challenger accident. The highest honor we can give our fallen Challenger astronauts and “teachernaut,” Christa McAuliffe, is for NASA to go forward with the Teacher in Space mission.

Reinstatement of the Teacher in Space mission before this century is out would restore a national purpose to our manned space program and above all honor the Challenger crew by continuing their mission. The Challenger legacy is that we should never quit reaching for the stars. NASA needs to know we are ready to fly again.

* Re “NASA Launches Lunar Explorer,” Jan. 7: I think the idea of another moon mission is great! I have always been interested in space exploration. There is definitely a lot we can learn out there.

One thing bothers me, though. If we can afford $63 million to send a machine to study the moon that will eventually crash-land and join the other trash up there, why can’t we find money to feed the hungry people on our streets? Aren’t they important also?
