EVANS’ ALLURE

Share

What a relief to find out I am not alone in the “cult” of Evans (“The Last Original,” by Amy Wallace, Jan. 4)! Repeated listening to Robert Evans’ hypnotic tale as the rogue prince of Hollywood has made a dull commute a ritual in self-motivation. He is the finest raconteur in Hollywood and, like it or not, as responsible for the second golden age of the motion picture industry in the ‘70s as anyone else. It’s about time the next generation discovered him.

Three cheers for continuing to stay in the picture! I for one can’t wait to see what he’ll do next.

Robert Evans is probably the only producer in history that’s as handsome, and more, than the movie stars he employed. Nothing could be better than to see him on the screen again acting.

Whatever Robert Evans was or is, good manners and civility do not seem to be the high points of his personality or character. Calling Dustin Hoffman a midget? If height alone is a sure sign of talent, Evans disqualifies himself. (I should know--I worked for Evan Picone in the early ‘60s and might add that his brother Charles or their father would have never made a comment like that, refined and polished gentlemen that they always were.)

In 1966, I saw a totally unknown actor in an off-off Broadway play called “Eh!” and instinctively sensed that he was a giant in the making. His name: Dustin Hoffman.

Maybe Evans will publicly apologize to Hoffman and all the short-statured people--when he decides to grow up.

I practically swallowed Evans’ autobiography on tape whole. It was Worship City time for me. For many days during the hot summer of 1996, I listened in my car, pondering what it must be like to be a big fish like him. This contemplation caused me to arrive at my appointments late because I couldn’t turn it off--and I’m not even in the industry.

“The Kid Stays in the Picture” gave me the chills. That voice, those memories. Now the cover of Calendar is taped proudly to my office wall. Very cool, you know, while being very hot.

Evans: Don’t ever change!

There is one word to describe “The Last Original,” and that is shameless.

Robert Evans is quoted as saying, “I went to the Palm for dinner and a young kid comes over to me. He said, ‘Are you Robert Evans? I’m P.T. Anderson.’ ”

Interesting. In the adult-video world, there is a respected former performer--now a director--who goes by the name “Paul Thomas.” He is referred to throughout the adult industry as “P.T.”

And now Paul Thomas Anderson is introducing himself as “P.T. Anderson.” Looks like life is imitating art again.
