Prize Giving Turns the Tables With Victory in the San Marcos
Three horses in the field had beaten him three weeks ago, but Monday was Prize Giving’s day as the 5-year-old gelding scored a 1 1/2-length win in the $162,300 San Marcos Handicap at Santa Anita.
The difference might have been Monday’s added distance. At 1 1/8 miles in the San Gabriel Handicap on Dec. 28, Martiniquais, Bienvenido and Da Bull ran 1-2-3, but Monday, at 1 1/4 miles, they were the trailers. Bienvenido ran second, Martiniquais, the 7-5 favorite, was third and Da Bull finished fourth in the six-horse field.
Ridden by Alex Solis for trainer Neil Drysdale, Prize Giving reached the wire in 2:04 2/5 on a track listed as good. He paid $9.80.
An umbrella giveaway helped account for a crowd of 29,644, second highest of the season.
