Dennis Dixon, the long-time Golden West College assistant football coach who was head coach for one year, died Wednesday of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was 50.
Dixon is survived by his mother, sister and three children. He started at Golden West in 1978 as the offensive line coach and remained in that role until he took over as head coach in 1995.
Dixon, a graduate of Orange High, was a standout tight end at Fullerton College and played on its 1965 national championship team. He played two seasons at Alabama under Bear Bryant and took part in the 1967 Cotton Bowl and the 1968 Gator Bowl. He also was a graduate assistant for Bryant.
“He was a modern-day gladiator,” Golden West Coach Mike Shaughnessy said. “Here’s a guy who just had a horrible disease and fought it up to the end.”
