Walk at Pierce College to Track Canada Geese
At its annual Goose Walk on Saturday, the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society will give people a chance to get better acquainted with the Canada geese that make the San Fernando Valley their winter home.
Organizers will gather at Pierce College from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. to watch the geese fly onto the campus, and from 8:30 to 10 a.m. to watch the birds forage on the farmland.
Participants will meet in front of the Agricultural Science Building, on El Rancho Drive between De Soto and Mason avenues. They are encouraged to wear walking shoes and warm clothing and bring binoculars.
The Pierce College Farm, the Chatsworth and Encino reservoirs and the Sepulveda Dam are vital links in the migratory path of the Canada goose, Audubon officials said.
Last month, society members counted more than 750 geese on college grounds, down from the 1,700 that arrived in 1992.
The Goose Walk will be lead by Wendi Gladstone, an Audubon member, and Ted Kinchloe, a Pierce biology instructor.
If there is rain on Saturday, the walk will be postponed for one week to Jan. 31.
