Deputy Hurt in Swift-Water Rescue Drill
A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was injured while participating in a swift-water training exercise in the Los Angeles Aqueduct in Sylmar on Friday morning.
The 43-year-old deputy, assigned to the sheriff’s emergency services detail, was part of a training session sponsored by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The deputy, who was not identified by sheriff’s officials, suffered a mild concussion and cuts to his head and bruises to his back when he was dragged under rapidly flowing water. Other exercise participants hoisted him out of the water by grabbing safety lines attached to the deputy.
He was under water for about 30 seconds, Deputy Elsa Azila said.
Paramedics took the deputy to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he was listed in stable condition.
