An apartment fire caused by a “hot object on a sofa” left four families temporarily homeless Monday, authorities said.

The blaze caused $80,000 damage to the 20-unit Orange Gardens Town Homes complex at 1602 Nisson Road, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Scott Brown said. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters arrived about 11:45 p.m. and worked until after 3 a.m. Monday.

It is unclear what sparked the fire, which quickly spread and severely damaged three neighboring units, Brown said. Officials estimated that $60,000 of the damage was to the structure.

The American Red Cross provided shelter to the eight adults and two children who were displaced, Brown said.
