Council OKs Sale of Land for Airport Use

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works took a piece of property off the city Department of Water and Power’s hands Tuesday when the City Council approved the sale of a ribbon of land to be used at Whiteman Airport.

The county agreed to pay the city $4,000 for a 43,124-square-foot strip off Osborne Street that will be used to square off the airport property, but the land is useless for much more than that, county officials said.

The parcel averages 12 feet wide and is more than 3,000 feet long.

“It would be great if it was a nice big square piece of land, but it’s not,” said Gary Harshman, airport project manager for public works.

“We’ll just use it to put in a new property line fence.”

The DWP a few years ago found that the parcel was excess property that could not be developed, city officials said.
