Stretch of Beach Reopened After Bacteria Count Drops
A two-mile stretch of beach in Redondo Beach and Torrance was reopened Thursday by Los Angeles County health officials after they determined that high bacteria levels from a sewage spill had abated.
The area from Topaz Way south to the base of the Palos Verdes Peninsula was closed late Tuesday when a blocked sewer line caused 3,000 gallons of raw sewage to spill into the ocean. The line was repaired, but officials predicted it would take a day or so for the high bacteria levels to dissipate.
Tests showed water bacteria counts returned to acceptable levels Thursday morning, said Vivian Rosenberg of the county Department of Health Services.
Health officials said the closure was the first in the county this year because of sewage spills. There were four closures last year, they said.
Signs are posted and swimming and wading are prohibited when a beach is closed.
