Retrofitting to Close Lane of Vincent Thomas Bridge
As part of a $26-million seismic retrofitting on the Vincent Thomas Bridge that connects San Pedro to Terminal Island, the eastbound right lane will be closed today from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday, a Caltrans spokeswoman said.
The closure is part of a project that has been underway since April, and is expected to be completed by the end of next year. The same lane will be closed again Feb. 20. The closures are in addition to ongoing closures of the same lane from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sundays through Thursdays through March 16.
The retrofitting is intended to reinforce the bridge so that it can withstand a major earthquake. Construction crews are making improvements to the roadway, support columns and underneath the bridge.
