SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP
Boise State 84, Long Beach State 60--The Broncos exploited Long Beach State’s Achilles’ heel, the lack of a point guard, turning up the defensive pressure and getting 17 points from Roberto Bergersen in a victory at Boise, Idaho.
Boise State is deepest where the 49ers are most shallow, at guard, and the Broncos pressured Long Beach State into 23 turnovers. Boise had only six all night.
The 49ers (8-11, 3-4 in the Big West) took a 6-0 lead and held a 17-12 advantage before Boise State (12-8, 4-3) started a 26-11 run to take a 38-38 halftime lead.
Long Beach State--which made 50% of its shots, but which shot 17 fewer times, largely because of the turnovers--pulled to within 40-36, but the Broncos answered with a 21-6 run to break the game open.
The 49ers were led by center Andrew Betts, who had 20 points and made eight of his nine shots.
