Restoration of Harbor Jetty Gets Underway
Work has begun on a project to shore up the south jetty at Ventura Harbor--and for once, this winter’s El Nino is not being blamed for the damage.
Harbor officials said Monday the massive, 10-ton concrete supports that make up most of the jetty’s foundation are showing signs of failure after 36 years of pounding waves.
Through the rest of the summer and into the fall, contractors working under a $2.4-million U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contract will replace the concrete supports while cranes work underwater to replace rocks.
Work is set to be complete by October, officials said.
“The structure has performed very well,” said Richard Parsons, former harbor manager now overseeing the project as a harbor district consultant. “But it’s 36 years old, and it hasn’t had any maintenance. It needs a little attention.”
