Crackdown Puts Brakes on Speeders

Share

Acting on complaints from residents, sheriff’s deputies recently cracked down on speeders, issuing 274 tickets in seven weeks--five times the usual number for a similar time period, officials said.

“We’re trying to slow them down,” City Manager Fred Maley said of the stepped-up effort, which ended in late June.

In 201 of the citations, drivers exceeded the posted speed limit by 10 mph to 15 mph. Fifty motorists were driving 16 mph to 20 mph over the speed limit, which is posted at 25 mph to 35 mph in most cases. Eight motorists were caught driving 50 mph or faster.

About 100 additional tickets were issued for other moving violations, including running stop signs or making unsafe lane changes.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department, which provides police services in Villa Park under contract, assigned additional deputies throughout town during the crackdown. Officials said speeding has been a problem on many streets, especially major thoroughfares.

Residents on Vida and Francisco drives also complained about speeders cutting through their neighborhoods to reach Collins Avenue and Villa Park Road. Deputies issued 10 citations to motorists in this area.

The majority of the motorists cited during the crackdown were from Orange, Villa Park and Anaheim, respectively, sheriff’s officials told the City Council at a recent meeting.

Deputies issued the most tickets on Villa Park Road, Prado Woods Drive, Taft and Nichols avenues, Meats Avenue and Stone Pine Road.
