Official Pleads Not Guilty to Forging Registration

City Clerk John Oliver pleaded not guilty Tuesday to criminal charges of forging or altering a vehicle registration sticker on a van he owned, officials said.

Redondo Beach parking enforcement officers discovered Oliver’s Ford Econoline van with the allegedly fraudulent sticker during a routine traffic enforcement patrol near Redondo Union High School in October.

“Investigators found the van had not been registered for a number of years, and information we developed that evening revealed the van was owned by our city clerk,” said John Wisser, traffic investigator with the city of Redondo Beach.

“Additional fraudulent tags and copied documents found in his house would give the impression that there was more than just one or two occasions where this happened,” Wisser said.

Oliver, 49, could not be reached for comment.

If convicted, Oliver could face a maximum sentence of three years in prison and lose his job. A pretrial date is scheduled for Aug. 10.
