SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Los Angeles police are seeking to question a mother and son, held in New York on an unrelated fraud warrant, in connection with the death of a Granada Hills man whose body was found in a trash bin at Los Angeles International Airport in March, authorities said Tuesday.

LAPD detectives want to question Sante Kimes, 63, and her son Kenneth Kimes, 23, about the death of 63-year-old David Kazdin, a police source said.

Police sources said Kazdin, whose body was found March 14, had been an acquaintance of Sante Kimes for more than 20 years.

Mother and son were being held in a New York City jail Tuesday night on a Utah communications fraud warrant after a joint federal and local law enforcement task force arrested them Sunday night.

Meanwhile, New York police are also questioning the Kimeses in the mysterious disappearance of wealthy New York widow Irene Silverman, 82, last seen by an employee Sunday morning, wandering around in a nightgown at her lavish turn-of-the century mansion, NYPD Det. Joseph Pentangelo said.

The employee called police at 5 p.m. after failing to find Silverman in the duplex where she lived, or anywhere else in the building, the New York Daily News reported. Silverman rarely leaves the house without a member of her staff.

Kenneth Kimes had rented a $6,000 a month apartment in the same building on June 14, the newspaper reported.

NYPD Deputy Inspector Joseph Reznick told the New York Daily News: ‘We have an occupant of an apartment, who she rented to less than three weeks ago, who has also disappeared mysteriously. We are looking at two individuals who have just vanished.”

Neither of the Kimeses have been arrested in her disappearance. But fears were heightened after New York investigators discovered that Los Angeles police want to question the pair in Kazdin’s death, the New York Daily News reported.

Police continued to search for Irene Silverman, but she was still missing Tuesday night. Police told the New York Daily News the Kimeses were arrested Sunday at the New York Hilton. Sante Kimes was found with Silverman’s passport, some of her checks and her bank account information.
