More than two-thirds of the Netherlands’ population of 15.5 million watched the World Cup team’s quarterfinal victory over Argentina last Saturday, a record for that country. The estimated audience was 10.5 million.

Apparently, even the Croatian team was surprised by its victory over Germany in the quarterfinals.
It had arranged for plane tickets home after the game. But the Germans were equally surprised: They had asked to extend their stay at their hotel before the loss made it unnecessary.
