Independent Library Focus of Meeting
Proponents of a new library in Costa Mesa independent of the county system will host a town hall meeting July 16 to discuss the proposal with residents and elected leaders.
Organized as a panel discussion, it will include Orange County Supervisor Jim Silva, Councilman Joe Erickson, Newport-Mesa Unified School District Trustee Dana Black, Ron Channels of Todos Hermanos and Girl Scout youth representatives.
Proponents, who have formed a foundation, are calling for a new library in a centrally located area. Members have said they are dissatisfied with the two county library branches in downtown and Mesa Verde and propose a technologically advanced center with computers and up-to-date books and periodicals.
Project costs have been estimated at $15 million, said Joan Murphine, a spokeswoman for the library foundation. Funding would come from donations and possibly a portion of the city’s annual allotment to the Orange County library system, she said.
The group recently hired fund-raiser Robert Kiley as a consultant to the foundation.
