An 83-year-old man was recovering Wednesday from injuries he suffered while trying to rescue his Chihuahuas from dognappers.

Police detectives are searching for a couple who went to Allen Hayden’s home in response to an advertisement for miniature Chihuahua puppies.

Hayden said the couple showed up after 10 p.m. with two girls. The children played with the puppies and then took one of them and his prize dog to their car.

Hayden said he was leaning into the car to retrieve one of the animals when the woman took off with him hanging on the outside. The car hit a rock, damaging the front passenger door and throwing Hayden to the ground.

“The man threw the puppy out of the car and it was killed when they ran over it or I landed on it,” Hayden said. He was treated at a local hospital for severe bruises.

Detectives are pursuing a number of leads in what authorities consider a violent robbery and assault on a senior citizen.
