Airport Expansion
The recent closure of Pacific Coast Highway due to a landslide, and the associated diversion of traffic, has slowed rush-hour commuters over vast reaches of the San Diego Freeway to just 7 mph. This slide, like the ones earlier this year, mimics what will happen if capacity is nearly doubled at Los Angeles International Airport, as proposed by Mayor Richard Riordan.
We might just as well cordon off several miles of the San Diego Freeway and let the planes land there--the airport expansion proposal is a $10-billion prescription for paralysis!
