Computer Course Offered in Spanish

Mission College is offering computer courses in Spanish for the first time to measure the level of interest toward classes taught in the language.

“We just wanted to give more opportunities to the community to meet its needs,” said Diane Astadurian, director of the college’s community extension program.

“Computers is a very timely subject,” Astadurian said. “We’re in a community with a lot of Hispanic people.”

Six computer classes will be taught in Spanish by instructors who also speak English, using Spanish textbooks and English computer software packages, Astadurian said.

The classes cover beginning and advanced applications of Microsoft Word, an introduction to the Internet and a general introduction to computers, according to the college.

Most of the Spanish computer classes meet for one session for several hours, though some convene twice.

Twenty-three students have filled the next class, an introduction course scheduled Tuesday, Astadurian said.

“We already have a full class, so we’re getting a good response,” she said.

Another introduction class meets July 20, with seats still available.

The classes also are offered in English. In all, the college offers 26 computer courses, including workshops on digital animation.

Fees range from $44 to $99 depending on how often the classes meet. For more information, call the extension office between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday at (818) 364-7387.
