Reading for Fun
To promote summer reading, the Los Angeles Public Library runs a children’s book club through Aug. 8. The club, L.A. Kids Read “A World of Tales,” is free to children of all ages and available at every library branch. Participants are not required to read a certain number of books, but by logging how much they read, they’re eligible for prizes and certificates.
Books Come Alive
The Los Angeles Public Library has scheduled several children and family activities this summer. The programs include Flights of Fantasy Story Theater, Storytellers and Troubadours and Wildlife on Wheels. Tobie Columbus, above, acts out a story at the North Hollywood branch. Popular Reading
Following detective Cam Jansen or Nate the Great through another mystery caper is a popular summertime adventure for young readers, said Elizabeth Nelson, children’s librarian at the Platt Branch Library in Woodland Hills. Other favorites include the Encyclopedia Brown series.
Library Visits
Area libraries remain busy throughout the summer, but there is a shift in the usage, said Anne Connor, children’s service coordinator for the Los Angeles Public Library. “It’s not kids coming in to do homework or research; it’s them coming in to find fun books to read,” she said.
