A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and sexual battery stemming from an assault earlier this month at a Santa Paula tavern, police said.

Jorge Luis Ramirez of Santa Paula remained jailed Thursday in lieu of $250,000 bail. He was arrested Wednesday morning after police spotted him driving near Santa Maria Street and Palm Avenue in Santa Paula.

Police released few details except to say that Ramirez had been wanted for stabbing a man July 5 at The Pastime bar at 704 E. Harvard Blvd.

Bartender Paul Magallon said Ramirez and the victim, who is a Pastime regular, were both in the tavern late that night when Ramirez made an unwanted advance toward a female manager before dropping his cocktail glass on the floor.

When the victim apparently went to assist the manager, he slipped on the glass and injured himself, Magallon said. The victim was treated for cuts at a local hospital and has since been released, Magallon said.

“He wasn’t stabbed,” Magallon added.

Ramirez was scheduled for arraignment today.
