Long Beach Mayor O’Neill Begins Second 4-Year Term

Mayor Beverly O’Neill begins her second four-year term today with three new faces on the City Council after Tuesday evening’s swearing-in ceremony for city officials.

Along with O’Neill, council members Frank Colonna, Jackie Kell and Ray Grabinski were sworn in to represent the 3rd, 5th and 7th districts, respectively.

While they might be new, none of them are strangers. Grabinski and Colonna ran against O’Neill for mayor in 1994. O’Neill won that election, defeating Grabinski in a runoff. O’Neill in 1994 succeeded Ernie Kell, Jackie Kell’s husband.

All three new members have said city government should place greater emphasis on shoring up neighborhoods.

Also sworn in Tuesday were Robert Shannon, who replaces retiring John Calhoun as city attorney, and Tom Reeves, who replaces retiring John A. Vander Lans as city prosecutor.
