Los Angeles County supervisors agreed Tuesday to offer a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the culprit who last week shot and wounded a 3-year-old boy in the head as the youngster traveled in a car on the Pomona Freeway.

Andrew Monroy remains in critical condition at County-USC Medical Center after being shot Thursday while riding with his two brothers and their father, Thomas Simental, 23, of Los Angeles.

“When the county sees this kind of cowardly act, especially concerning children, the county must step up and take an aggressive role,” said Supervisor Gloria Molina, who authored the emergency motion.

Molina characterized the incident as gang retaliation and said the child was an innocent victim in a shooting targeting a gang member. Simental, who was shot in both hands, is a gang member, according to sheriff’s investigators.

Sheriff’s investigators believe that the shooter was in a newer metallic green Dodge passenger van with sliding doors on both sides.
