Royal High School Principal Resigns

Hoping to shave some miles off his lengthy commute, Douglas Huckaby this week resigned as principal of Royal High School in Simi Valley to take a position closer to his home in Riverside.

He announced Wednesday that he had accepted an offer to become the principal at La Canada High School in Los Angeles County.

He could not be reached for comment Friday.

“One of the things that made it difficult for him was the long commute,” said Judy Barry, a former school board trustee who was on the board that hired Huckaby in 1995.

“I can’t even imagine. That’s a couple hundred miles a day.”

Huckaby had been an assistant superintendent at Riverside Community College.

Huckaby was well-liked by students, Barry said.

“He was a very friendly kind of person and out and about on the campus. He attended the student activities as much as he was able to. He was a pretty visible person.”

In 1987, Huckaby had been named Riverside County principal of the year while working at Rubidoux High School.
