NEW CANTOR: Shomrei Torah Synagogue, 7353 Valley Circle Blvd., West Hills, will welcome Cantor Joel Fox to the pulpit at Friday’s 8 p.m. service. A reception will follow. Fox studied at the Israel Institute of Cantorial Art in Tel Aviv, as well as at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem. He was the head music director at Camp Ramah in Massachusetts and comes to the synagogue from Congregation Beth El in La Jolla. Fox will officiate during the Shabbat and holiday services throughout the year.

MYTHOLOGY LECTURE: Psychologist Jonathan Young will present “The Magic of Mythic Stories,” a lecture on fairy tales and insights into personal stories, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Aug. 9 at Emerson Unitarian Church, 7304 Jordan Ave., Canoga Park. Young is a storyteller, psychologist and writer of sacred stories who assisted mythology scholar Joseph Campbell in many seminars. From 1990 to 1995, he was the curator of the Joseph Campbell Archives and Library. Young will also speak at the 10:30 a.m. service. The cost of the lecture is $12. Information: (818) 887-6101.
