Phillies Win Rally-athon
The Phillies rallied four times in the final four innings, getting a run-scoring single from Rico Brogna in the 12th Friday night to defeat the Florida Marlins, 7-6, and sweep their doubleheader.
Philadelphia overcame a 3-1 deficit and sent it to extra innings when Mark Lewis hit his first career pinch-hit homer, a two-run shot, in the ninth.
Florida had a chance to win three times in extra innings, taking a one-run lead in the 10th, 11th and 12th only to have the Phillies rally each time.
Ruben Amaro’s leadoff homer in the 12th off Vic Darensbourg (0-7) tied it 6-6. Doug Glanville then singled and Desi Relaford sacrificed. Darensbourg walked Scott Rolen intentionally before Brogna’s base hit ended it.
Mark Leiter (4-2) gave up Cliff Floyd’s RBI single in the 12th but got the win.
Florida outhit Philadelphia, 17-9, but still lost its seventh straight.
The Phillies, who have 31 comeback victories, also rallied to win the opener, 6-4, on Rolen’s two-run homer in the 12th.
In the second game, Florida rookie Andy Larkin, promoted from the minors earlier in the day, took a two-hitter into the ninth before the Phillies tied it on Lewis’ homer.
