The Irvine Barclay Theatre closed its 1997-98 fiscal year June 30 with a $46,000 surplus after expenses of $2.6 million, theater president Douglas C. Rankin has announced.

To pay those expenses, the theater raised more than $1.2 million in donations. The other $1.4 million came from box-office sales ($670,000) and general support from the city of Irvine and UC Irvine.

More than 115,000 people attended 215 public events at the 750-seat theater in 1997-98, with overall average attendance rising to 76% of capacity, from 73% the previous season. The theater is used by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and other presenters.

Of the 40 events presented by the theater, 25 were sold out, and average capacity for the Irvine Barclay’s dance, world music, pop concerts and other events hit a record 92%, up from 89% the previous season.

In other news, Rudy Pollak stepped down after five years as chairman of the development committee. He will be succeeded by board member Sam Goldstein of Laguna Beach.
