With the front row filled with cheering family and nine fellow deputies watching, Deputy Frank Nin was named Deputy of the Year by the City Council.

“I’m accepting this award on behalf of the citizens of San Juan Capistrano who have joined me in the trenches fighting crime,” Nin said. “We need each other, and we can make a difference.”

Nin is part of the Sheriff’s Department’s mounted unit and the only officer on horseback in San Juan Capistrano, according to Lt. Paul Sullivan.

He rides his own horse, Murphy’s Law, and trains it to perform tricks. He and Murphy’s Law visit local schools to teach students to stay away from drugs and crime.

Nin spends off-duty time at the Fran Joswick Therapeutic Riding Center center helping with security issues and building projects, said Dana Butler, the center’s executive director.

“He’s a terrific guy,” Butler said. “I can’t think of someone more deserving of the honor.”
