Silva Has 68, Wins by Three at Crystalaire

Tom Silva of Palm Springs shot a final-round 68 Wednesday and won the $28,000 Teardrop Tour Crystalaire Classic at Crystalaire Country Club in Llano.

Silva, the Tour’s leading money winner, finished with a three-round total of 198, three strokes better than Ted Oh of Las Vegas and eight better than Steve McMichael of Napa.

Silva won $10,000, Oh $6,000 and McMichael $4,000.

Tony Bordwell of Valencia and John Johnson of Ventura tied with three others for fifth place. Bordwell shot 71-68-69--208 and Johnson finished with 69-68-71--208. Each earned $920.

Russell Surber of Flintridge and Jason Semelsberger of Newhall shot even-par 72s in the opening round of the Western Amateur Championship at Point O’Woods Golf and Country Club in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

John Ehrgott of Peoria, Ill., leads at 66.

The field will be cut to the top 50 after today’s second round. Those making the cut will play two more stroke-play rounds on Friday and the top 16 advance to match play.

BASEBALL

Doug Latta and Alan Namay have been selected to coach Campbell Hall.

Both are former assistants at North Hollywood and have coached youth baseball for the last 10 years.

BASKETBALL

Michelle Greco, a graduate of Crescenta Valley High, scored eight points to help the U.S. national team win the title in the under-19 Women’s Basketball World Championships last weekend in Shreveport, La.

Team USA defeated Estonia, 68-22, in the championship game Saturday.

The U.S. beat Antigua, 83-14, in the semifinals when Greco, an all-tournament selection, scored five points.

CYCLING

Dave Clinger of Woodland Hills and the Mercury Racing Team won the second stage of the Tour de ‘Toona and holds a five-second lead in the six-stage event in Altoona, Pa.

MOTOR RACING

Ben Walker of Santa Clarita finished second to Steve Smith of Escondido in the 100-lap Ultra Wheel Spec Trucks main event race Saturday at Mesa Marin Raceway.
