Tropical Storm Alex gained strength Thursday as it continued its westward march across the Atlantic Ocean, and forecasters said it could become a hurricane Saturday.

Alex’s maximum sustained winds Thursday afternoon were about 50 mph and further strengthening was expected, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm’s center was about 880 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and it was heading west about 15 mph.
