The nonprofit Ventura County Fire Department Benefit Fund has selected five students in the county for $500 scholarships.

The students, who are relatives of county firefighters, will be presented their awards during the association’s second annual barbecue Saturday at Camarillo Grove Park.

The awards are “to encourage department members and their immediate family to excel in educational areas,” said Mark Lorenzen, treasurer of the benefit fund, which has been giving out scholarships for more than 15 years.

Sierra Gordon, a 17-year-old Ojai resident attending Nordhoff High School, was awarded the scholarship for a student involved in athletics.

Laura Dilley, a 37-year-old Newbury Park resident who attends Moorpark College, received the award for someone continuing their education to pursue a career.
