Ocean Transport, Cameras for PCH

Share

As a 42-year veteran of the Pacific Coast Highway, I believe I have seen it all (“The Perils of PCH,” May 22). One reason for its poor safety is the multiuse PCH receives. Residents on the way to the market mingling with beach-goers, surfers, students and intrepid commuters make for multi-objective drivers with disastrous results.

During similar PCH closures in the El Nino of 1982, Caltrans instituted an ocean ferry service between Santa Monica and Malibu. Only lasting a few days, it may be an idea whose time has come. With the advent of high-speed marine transport capable of significant passenger and car capacities, what a relatively cost-effective transportation system it could be. Imagine the patronage of such a system, starting at Port Hueneme (or Oxnard/Ventura), making stops at Malibu, Santa Monica, Marina del Rey and ports south. Why not provide an alternate for the commuters where speed is of importance? Perhaps the safety will improve.

While visiting Australia, my husband and I noted that a large portion of highways and streets use cameras. Our friends tell us that it does work; as a general rule drivers tend to be more cautious when they know they are being watched.

There is no doubt that PCH is dangerous and something has to be done to put an end to senseless deaths. The most recent being the loss of a beautiful girl, Sabrina Csato.

Why not install cameras on PCH in addition to the other proposals to make PCH a safe highway?
