New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter left Wednesday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays after straining an abdominal muscle, and Manager Joe Torre predicted Jeter would need to go on the disabled list.

Jeter was injured while checking his swing in the fifth inning.

The Devil Rays’ Wade Boggs got a standing ovation when he came to bat in the first inning and waved his helmet to the Yankee Stadium crowd. He was let go by the Yankees after last season and signed with the expansion Devil Rays, his hometown team.

Oakland put right-hander Dave Telgheder on the 15-day disabled list because of a knee injury and activated outfielder-designated hitter Kevin Mitchell. Telgheder tore ligaments in his right knee Tuesday in Minnesota when he took an awkward step while fielding Otis Nixon’s base hit and will require surgery.

Mitchell had been on the disabled list since May 3 because of a strained right elbow. He completed a six-game rehabilitation assignment at Edmonton on Tuesday, going eight for 23 with two doubles.

Seattle reliever Tony Fossas was designated for assignment by the Mariners two days after giving up a game-winning homer against Baltimore. The Mariners recalled Greg McCarthy, another left-handed reliever, from triple-A Tacoma to take Fossas’ spot in the bullpen. Fossas, 40, was 0-3 with an 8.74 earned-run average in 23 relief appearances. . . . Boston activated Damon Buford from the 15-day disabled list and demoted right-hander John Wasdin to triple-A Pawtucket. Buford was sidelined by a knee injury. Kansas City acquired middle infielder Luis Rivera from the Houston Astro organization in exchange for cash and recalled shortstop Mendy Lopez from triple-A Omaha.

St. Louis left-hander Donovan Osborne, who has been on the disabled list since May 8 because of a sore shoulder, will start rehabilitation next week. Since late in the 1993 season, Osborne has been on and off the disabled list six times. The Cardinals are getting little return from the three-year, $12.75-million deal he signed off a career-best 13-9 season in 1996.

Osborne was limited to 14 starts last year due to a groin injury and hernia, and won three of them. So far this year, he’s 1-2 with a 2.64 ERA in five starts.

Atlanta shortstop Walt Weiss sat out his fifth consecutive game because of a right hamstring injury. . . . Montreal signed its first-round draft choice, shortstop Josh McKinley of Downingtown, Pa. He took batting practice with the team before the game, and will report to Jupiter of the Gulf Coast League. . . . Arizona designated right-hander Scott Brow for assignment and recalled catcher Tom Wilson from triple-A Tucson. Wilson was to take the place of catcher Damian Miller, who left the team to be with his expectant wife in Phoenix. But Miller returned, so Wilson was optioned and the Diamondbacks purchased the contract of infielder Mike Robertson. . . . Cub third baseman Kevin Orie, who was sent down to triple-A Iowa on May 27 in the midst of a hitting slump, is 10 for 17 with two home runs.
