Ruelas Brothers Will Attempt to Ring Up More Victories

Brothers Rafael and Gabriel Ruelas of Sylmar, former world champions, are scheduled to fight on separate boxing cards in the next two months.

Rafael (51-3, 41 knockouts), who lost his International Boxing Federation lightweight title to Oscar De La Hoya in 1995, will face an opponent to be determined in a 10-round junior-welterweight bout June 19 in Atlantic City, N.J. The fight is on the undercard of the Kenny Bowman-Montell Griffin 12-round main event for the North American Boxing Federation heavyweight title.

Gabriel Ruelas (44-4, 23 knockouts), former World Boxing Council junior-lightweight champion, will fight Troy Dorsey in a 12-round bout for the NABF junior-lightweight title July 11 in San Antonio.

On the mend: Heavyweight Lance Whitaker of Granada Hills, who suffered a deep cut above his left eye May 1 while recording a six-round knockout of Earl Butler, likely will return to the ring in July.

Whitaker is 16-0 with 14 knockouts.

Caught in draft: Tommy Perez, a shortstop at Burroughs High, was selected in the 45th round by the Montreal Expos in the amateur draft.

Good Fortune: Hart High pitcher Amanda Fortune has been selected Foothill League player of the year.

The sophomore right-hander was 15-5 with an 0.60 earned-run average to help the Indians win their first league title since 1992.

All-star showcase: The sixth annual Ventura County East-West All-Star boys’ and girls’ matches will be played tonight at Moorpark College.

The girls’ match is scheduled for 7 p.m., the boys’ match at 8. Both will be best-of-three games.

The boys’ East team will be coached by Bob Ferguson of Royal High, and the West will be coached by Peter Fox of Buena.

Players on the East team include Cal State Northridge recruits Oliver Bell of Simi Valley and Steve Russell of Royal.

Westlake’s Chris Rundle will coach the East girls’ team, and Buena’s Jimmy Miranda will coach the West. Both Rundle and Miranda resigned from their positions after last season.

The East girls’ squad includes Southern Section Division II-A player of the year Brooke Rundle, a setter from division champion Westlake High who will play at UC Santa Barbara.

Other Westlake players on the team are Georgetown-bound Megan Mullen, Houston-bound Erika Denison, and Heather Hutchison and Bridgett Tichauer.

There will be a serving contest for spectators between matches. General admission is $3. Children under 12 will be admitted free.

Freshman honors: John Baxter, a setter from Royal High who plays at Cal State Northridge, and Matt Prosser, a middle blocker from Buena High who plays at Long Beach State, were selected to Volleyball magazine’s NCAA Division I all-freshman team.

Coaching move: Former Moorpark College women’s Coach Mike Scanlon has been hired for the same job at Oxnard College. He replaces Cuba Cabrera.

Scanlon was Western State Conference coach of the year at Moorpark in 1995 and was 29-7-4 in two seasons before he was dismissed before last season.

Before coaching at Moorpark, Scanlon led the Moorpark High boys’ team to a Southern Section championship in 1994.

Promotion: Ron Haywood has been hired as girls’ coach at Highland High.

Haywood has served as interim coach for the last month after the resignation of Tim Knight.

In his only season as coach, Knight guided the Bulldogs to an 18-6 record and their first playoff appearance.
