A reader phoned last week to ask if there was any longer a place like Don Allison's. For those fairly new to area bargain shopping, Don Allison's was a catalog showroom--more catalog than showroom--where you could browse through furniture manufacturers' catalogs and buy wares at considerably lower than retail prices.
Allison disappeared from the retail market several seasons ago, but the answer to the question is "Yes, there's Eddie Gold Furniture Inc." The best-priced pieces at Gold's 5,000-square-foot warehouse are samples and discontinued items.
A five-piece dining table with four chairs from a major manufacturer retails at well over $2,000, but the tag reads $895. A top-grain, forest-green leather sofa and love seat would sell at many places for around $9,000 but because it's a sample, the price here is $3,500.
Many top manufacturers are represented in Gold's catalogs, but I do not want to jeopardize the company's relationship with these fine furniture makers, so I will not name them. But trust me, these are companies you know.
You will find case goods (wood pieces without upholstery), motion upholstery pieces (recliners), top-of-the-line sleepers, upholstered chairs and sofas, mattresses, accessories and curios--at prices that average about 40% off retail. This 50-year-old, family-owned business is in the Mar Vista area, hidden in a small industrial complex that houses several discount merchants.
