Lifelong Oxnard resident Jesus “Chuy” Coronado died Tuesday after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was 64.

Coronado, a commercial painter, was also an avid fisherman. He was born Sept. 8, 1933, in Oxnard, and was an alumnus of Oxnard High School.

“Chuy was just a wonderful, great big mellow guy,” longtime friend George Penrod said. “He was kind of funny, and he made everybody laugh. He was always cracking up.”

Carol Coronado, Coronado’s youngest child, said he was a dedicated father.

“He was always loving and was always there for his children,” she said. “He was always sharing with his kids.

“He was a wise man,” she added.

When not working, Coronado was fishing. His fishing trips took him as far north as Oregon and as far south as Mexico.

“He lived and breathed fishing,” Penrod said.

Coronado brought the same passion to his work. A 35-year member of the International Brotherhood of Painters and Tapers Local 52, he was respected and loved by his fellow workers, according to friends and family.

Except for a stint as a paratrooper in the Army, Coronado lived his entire life in Oxnard.

He raised seven children with his wife of 43 years, Carmen.

“He loved it in Oxnard,” Carol Coronado said. “He never wanted to move.”

In addition to his wife and daughter, Coronado is survived by six sons: Michael, Peter, Angel, Richard, Armando and Jesus Jr. He also is survived by 22 grandchildren.

Services will be held today at the James A. Reardon Funeral Home in Oxnard. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
