Municipal Pool Will Offer Swim Classes

Share

The city pool opens seven days a week for the summer starting Monday, with a variety of swim lessons available through the Recreation and Community Services Department.

Parents who wish to introduce infants and preschoolers to the water can register their children and themselves for free classes that will run from June 22 to July 3.

For children who are ready to take to the water without their parents, free first-level swim classes are also available during that time.

Registration for the classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through June 19 at the recreation department. Additional registration will be held during the same hours, June 20 and 21, at the pool situated adjacent to the department offices at 208 Park Ave.

“We do have a limited amount of spaces in each class,” said Collette Ruiz, a recreation department employee who will help register swimmers.

Additional two-week sessions of the classes will be held throughout the summer at a charge of $14 for the infant class and $20 for the first-level class. Separate registration periods held exclusively at the pool will precede these sessions, Ruiz said.

Intermediate swimmers interested in joining the San Fernando Sharks Swim Team, which competes against other Valley teams, should contact the recreation department. Membership is $10 for the summer.

The city is also seeking teenagers to enroll in its junior lifeguard program, which teaches lifesaving techniques and allows participants to assist regular lifeguards. The program costs $10 for the summer.

Daily admission to the pool is 50 cents for children and $1 for adults. A $5 pass is available, good for $7 worth of visits. A $10 pass is also available, good for $15 worth of swimming. Children ages 5 to 17 get in free on holidays. For more information, call (818) 898-1290.
