Student Picked for Young Leaders Conference

* A Santa Clara High School senior has been selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., a leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit.

Steve Dummer will be among 350 scholars who will meet with leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government, the media and diplomatic corps. The conference will be held June 28-July 8.

Pen Women Honor Simi Valley Resident

* Jean Russell Vogel of Simi Valley received a Woman of Achievement Award from the National League of American Pen Women. Vogel has been a member of the league’s Simi Valley branch since 1986. The award is given every two years and recognizes job accomplishments, community service and service to the league.

Red Cross Salutes Volunteer of the Year

* The American Red Cross, Ventura County chapter honored Doug Off with the Stark Memorial Award, recognizing Off as the chapter’s Volunteer of the Year.

The honor is the highest award given by the chapter.

Off has served as instructor of safety courses, served on Red Cross boards and committees and devoted considerable effort to fund-raising. Also honored for outstanding volunteer service were:

Monica Streeter of Port Hueneme (Armed Forces Emergency Services); Trina Hole of Ventura (Disaster Services); Janet Dackow of Thousand Oaks (Exceptional Administrative); Eileen Cohen of Simi Valley and Greg Chamber of Moorpark (Volunteer Fund-Raisers of the Year); Phyllis Villarreal of Oxnard (Health and Safety Services); Jessie Rushing of Somis (Youth Services).
