Two Quakes Occur Off Coast; Third Rattles Gilroy
Two earthquakes shook the ocean floor Sunday morning off the California coast while a third Sunday evening rattled Gilroy, south of San Francisco.
A magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred Sunday morning in the Pacific Ocean 72 miles northwest of Eureka, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The 6:29 a.m. temblor caused neither damage nor injuries and was in the Northern California segment of the offshore Cascadia subduction zone.
A second quake, of magnitude 3.7, also struck beneath the ocean floor Sunday.
The 10:33 a.m. tremor was centered 29 miles south-southwest of Dana Point and 53 miles west-northwest of San Diego.
Authorities in Orange and north San Diego County received no reports of the tremor being felt on shore.
The Gilroy quake, just before 7 p.m., registered a magnitude 4.0. No damage or injuries were reported. But, said Dorn Young of Aptos, “It was a little snappy jolt.”
Gilroy, located about 70 miles southeast of San Francisco, is perhaps best known for its annual garlic festival the last weekend in July.
