Titans’ Owens Is Top Hitter on U.S. Team

Cal State Fullerton infielder Ryan Owens is the leading hitter for the U.S. National team, which begins play Wednesday in Nicaragua, hoping to qualify for the World Championships July 22-Aug. 2 in Italy.

On Wednesday the U.S. team plays Venezuela, the first of nine games in Nicaragua, where 10 teams will try to be among the top five that qualify for the World Championships.

Owens, who attended Sonora High, has played in all nine of the U.S. team’s previous games, getting 12 hits in 20 at-bats (.600 average). He has seven runs scored, six doubles, three triples and eight runs batted in.

Owens played shortstop for Fullerton, which finished the season 47-17 after losing to LSU in the South II regional playoff finals. For the U.S. team, he has played third base and shortstop.

Also on the U.S. team is Brad Cresse, LSU’s power-hitting catcher from Marina High. He helped the two-time defending NCAA champion Tigers (48-19) come within one victory of the College World Series title game.

Cresse is batting .294 in eight games for the U.S. team. In 17 at-bats, he has five hits, including a double and a home run.
