Club established: 1988, when the San Francisco Giants put its franchise in San Jose. San Jose, however, has had minor league baseball team off and on since 1942.

Affiliation: The Giants’ Class A team.

Ownership: The team is owned by Progress Sports Management, a limited partnership. Harry Stavrenos is president.

Manager: Shane Turner, a former Cal State Fullerton player, is in his first season with San Jose after managing the Salem (Ore.) Volcanoes, the Giants’ rookie-league team, last year. Turner played professionally as an infielder for nine years, most of it in the minor leagues. He made appearances in the majors with Philadelphia (1988), Baltimore (1991) and Seattle (1992). He played for the Titans from 1982 through 1985.

Top current prospects: San Jose has several promising pitchers, including Jeff Andra and Manuel Bermudez. Andra was the Giants’ third-round pick in the 1997 draft. Catcher Giuseppe Chiaramonte, who played in college at Fresno State, led San Jose in home runs last year with 12 after joining the team at midseason. Luis Estrella, a former Cal State Fullerton pitcher, compiled a 5-5 record with a 3.39 earned-run average last season. Estrella is 5-2 with a 4.54 ERA this year.

Most famous alumni: A number of current major leaguers have played in San Jose, including the Cubs’ Rod Beck, the Cardinals’ Royce Clayton, the Tigers’ Deivi Cruz, the Giants’ Shawn Estes, the Angels’ Allen Watson and the Diamondbacks’ Matt Williams.

Home stadium: San Jose Municipal Stadium, where San Jose State plays, was built in 1942 and has a capacity of 4,200.

San Jose baseball history: The Giants attracted 146,151 fans last season, marking the third consecutive year the club has set a franchise attendance record. However, it was their least successful season on the field; they finished under .500 (60-80) for the first time. Since affiliating with San Francisco in 1988, San Jose has the best winning percentage (.572) among full-season minor league teams.

San Jose is famous for: being located in the heart of Silicon Valley, where, within a 30-mile radius of downtown, are 1,500 of the nation’s 2,500 largest electronics firms, which produce more semiconductors, computers and electronic components than anywhere else in the world.
