Scholarship to Fund Year’s Study in China

Share

George and Arlene Cheng of Newport Beach have created an annual scholarship in honor of retiring UC Irvine Chancellor Laurel L. Wilkening that will enable a UCI student to spend a year studying in China.

The Chengs agreed to pledge $12,500 a year to fund the Wilkening Education Abroad Program China Scholarship, beginning with the 1998-99 academic year.

The first scholarship will be awarded to Christopher M. Chambers, a double major in Chinese language and literature and English and comparative literature.

Chambers said he plans to spend his year in China studying in Beijing, expanding his Chinese language skills and experiencing the culture.

Criteria for the scholarship include well-defined academic goals, a plan to integrate the study abroad into UCI studies, and a commitment to return to UCI the following year to share experiences with other students. Financial need is considered, but not a requirement for receiving the scholarship.
