Michel Platini, the former French midfield standout who is co-president of the French Organizing Committee, wasn’t overwhelmed by the U.S. team’s offensive efforts in its 2-0 loss to Germany.

“The United States has an attractive game, but the American players often err on the last pass,” he said.

Helene Elliott

Helene Elliott was with the Los Angeles Times’ Sports department from 1989 to 2024, first as a staff writer and then, starting in 2006, as a columnist.
