Right-hander Bobby Witt, the second-winningest pitcher in Texas Ranger history, was designated for assignment before the Rangers’ game against Oakland. Texas has 10 days to trade, release or send Witt to the minor leagues. Witt’s fate was sealed when he gave up six runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings in Monday night’s 8-5 loss to the Angels. . . . Ownership of the Rangers was officially transferred to Tom Hicks, whose $250-million bid was approved by major league owners last week.

In a move to help bring depth to their ailing outfield, the Baltimore Orioles claimed Rich Becker off waivers from the New York Mets and assigned him to the major league roster. To make room, they designated Jesus Tavarez for assignment. Becker, 26, was a career .267 hitter in parts of five seasons with the Minnesota Twins before struggling in his first season with the Mets. . . . Toronto Blue Jay outfielder Jose Canseco was a late scratch from Tuesday’s game against Tampa Bay because of back spasms. A team spokesman said the problem is not considered serious and that Canseco might play today.
