Giants’ Rally Rocks Rockies

Rey Sanchez’s two-run single sparked a three-run rally in the seventh as the San Francisco Giants ended a five-game losing streak with a a 5-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.

Mike Lansing’s homer off Orel Hershiser in the top of the seventh gave the Rockies a 3-2 lead, but the Giants rallied in the bottom of the inning against Bobby Jones (1-2) and Dave Veres.

Singles by Brian Johnson and Marvin Benard, and an error by third baseman Vinny Castilla on Darryl Hamilton’s sacrifice bunt loaded the bases with no one out.

Veres replaced Jones and gave up Sanchez’s go-ahead single up the middle. Charlie Hayes’ sacrifice fly then made the score 5-3.

Julian Tavarez (3-3), who retired the only batter he faced on a double play, got the victory.

Robb Nen pitched the ninth for his 20th save in 21 chances.

Neck spasms forced Barry Bonds to miss his second consecutive game, forcing the injury-plagued Giants to bat Stan Javier (one home run, .226 average) third and Hayes (three home runs) at cleanup.

The Giants took a 1-0 lead in the first when Hamilton drew a leadoff walk, went to third on Sanchez’s single and scored when Javier grounded into a double play.

The Rockies tied the score in the second when Ellis Burks tripled and scored on Castilla’s groundout.

Colorado went ahead, 2-1, in the sixth on Todd Helton’s RBI single, but the Giants tied the score in the bottom of the inning on Rich Aurilia’s run-scoring double.

Jones gave up five runs and nine hits in six-plus innings.
